Sounds like no one has ever actually taught him to play. Spend time with him and teach him. Puppies are not just born knowing how to play they learn from being with their brothers and sisters. There are many foods on the market and one will be right for your boy. Start with small amounts and build up gradually. You could even start by giving him plain chicken, rice and fish then gradually start to mix in a little normal dog food and over time increase it little by little and reduce the chicken etc until he has all dog food. Also take him to the vet for a check up and get him wormed.

Adult GSD's should weigh between 70 and 90lbs.

My GSD is a picky eater. She'll pick at her food at times (I feed EVO natural kibble).

He may need to get used to his surroundings, but a visit to the vet wouldn't hurt. Overall health check and maybe draw blood to check for underlying health issues (normally rescues will have provided health care for the animals they take in) and when you go to the vet bring in a stool sample (gross I know) but that way the vet can check it for parasite (worms, etc.)

Try giving him a higher quality food (not the stuff the vets sell or the stuff you can buy at the grocery store (walmart, etc.). Some pet supply stores have good quality foods, it's just a matter of doing the leg-work and researching the different brands.
You could try giving him a raw diet (actually is the best diet for a dog) or get him started on a natural kibble. Check out this site: http://leerburg.com/diet.htm It should be helpful.

Try adding a diced boiled egg to the top of his food. It is good for him and he will like it. Once you get them eating they will usually eat what is under it. You could try buying some canned food and mixing it up in his dry food….. Also don't worry about the fetch, not all Shepherds will really fetch. I have had four now and only two liked to fetch, the other two would get the item a few times and then look at me like I was stupid. Try something else like tug-o-war or going for walks.
Also, if you have not been to a vet you should get an appointment.

GSD's are very sensitive dogs. The first thing you should do is have him vetted. Get his shots (if the shelter didn't already do that) and have your vet worm him and just look him over.

He is probably frightened. Therefore he won't eat well. Stick with a quality dry food..NOT Science diet. I will attach a link that you can compare food quality. If you walk him, spend time with him and just show him some affection, he will come around. The same with playing. He is probably too frightened to play if he even knows how. There is nothing much more sad than a dog that doesn't know how to play. That is often the case with rescues. Thanks for adopting him…just don't give up!

Take a trip to the veterinarian. This is necessary for a few different reasons. Your dog needs to be checked for worms and other illnesses that may cause it to lose weight. Your dog also needs to be weighed to ensure that it really is underweight. Dogs can become obese if they gain too much weight. Ask your veterinarian to let you know the proper weight range for your dog.

try mixing tuna into his food. if he is super skinny he musta be neglected and mayb is timid and scared. u dont know what has happened in the last 9months to him. take it slowly and gentley and show him you love him. when the dog feels secure and happy he propbably will play with u and settle in more. just keep tryin dif food. be patient sounds like this dog has had a hard start to life and is wary of people.

Ohk. Just give A LOT of what he likes to eat.. Like a WHOLE BUNCH of it. Then get him a lot of water too.
Seriously, give what he doesn't get picky on.. And later if he is used to it, try giving some more things in that food

Try changing the food brand you give him. Instead of jerky give him some other treats. And if he doesn't like eatting the kind of dry food you give him, change that also. But mix it gradually, so then he'll get use to the dog food.
  9. admin says:
Just keep feeding him what you are feeding him, he should become less picky and he is probably still settling in, also he probably doesn't know yet how to play properly you need to completely re-train him.

people dont know this, but kiddle and wet food are BAD. dogs are pretty much wolves, and wolves eat grass and meat, dont little crumbely balls. give him some meat, and have him checked for worms and stuf.

also, if he is fixed, it could have done something to him. I know if someone gave me surgery so my balls dident work I wouldent wannna do anything
